Bristol to Amsterdam Cycle 2027

Cycle Challenge Questions

How many days is the challenge?

The team will set off from the Hospice on Wednesday and cycle for four days, arriving in Amsterdam on Saturday. You will then have some free time that evening and Sunday morning, before flying back to Bristol. You can check out the itinerary for a full breakdown.

How fit do I need to be?

This challenge has been graded as Challenging (1) by Global Adventure's challenge grading scheme, meaning the cycle is achievable for all abilities as long as you put in adequate training beforehand. You do not need to be a fast cyclist, but do need to feel comfortable in the saddle four days in a row. The fitter you are the more you will enjoy the challenge!

If you have any doubts regarding your suitability for this challenge please contact us and we'll put you in touch with the Global Adventures team.

Is there a minimum age to take part?

The official minimum age to take part is 16 and anyone wishing to take part under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. We recommend only taking part if over the age of 18, however we are open to discussing having younger participants in the team so please do get in touch.

Do I need specialist kit and a fancy bike?

You do not need any specialist kit, just the cycling basics - we'll supply you with a kit list once you register to take part. You do not need a specific or expensive bike and can take part on whichever bike you choose, however the lighter the bike the better your experience will be.

What support will their be on the challenge?

This is a fully supported challenge. Alongside your St Peter's Hospice staff representative there will be a strong support team with a professional Global Adventure Challenges leader and support vehicles accompanying you too. Full comprehensive medical kits will be taken with the group and all of the team are trained in first aid.

Do I have to carry my own luggage?

No. You will need to have a day pack with you for items such as sunscreen, layers and snacks, as well as water bottles. But your main kit bag will be transported in the support vehicles to your accommodation each day.

What will the accommodation be like?

We will stay in simple hotels along the route, with twin rooms. You can specify who you would like to share a room with if you are signing up with a friend or have gotten to know one of the other riders ahead of the challenge. You can also pay an extra fee to upgrade to a single room where possible. At the end of Day 3, accommodation will be four berth cabins on the ferry to the Hook of Holland.

How big will the team be?

We're aiming to have a team of 30 to 45 take on this cycle together, all pedalling for St Peter's Hospice. There'll be plenty of meet ups to get to know each other before you head off on your challenge together!

Fundraising Questions

What is the fundraising target?

There is a minimum fundraising target of £1,950 to raise, and 80% of that total will need to be raised by February 2027 so that we can confirm your place.

Alternatively, you can opt to self-fund. This means you pay Global Adventures £1,200 to cover all of your costs for taking part, and then fundraise for St Peter's however much you can on top.

What are the best ways to fundraise that amount?

There are many ways that you can choose to fundraise, so you can make it suit you!

  • Set up an online fundraising page (we recommend JustGiving). This makes it really simple for people to donate and all donations come through to St Peter's automatically so you don't need to chase anyone for cash. It really helps to personalise your page - add photos, updates and your story of why you've chosen to take on this ride and just how hard it's going to be!

  • Host an event - there are so many options here including pub quizzes, supper clubs and barn dances. Find a space, set your ticket price and invite all your friends and family to come along! Events can take a bit more work to set up but they're a brilliant way to bring in a bulk of your fundraising in one night (and we have plenty of resources to help)

  • Hold a bake sale! It sounds simple (and it is) but these can be a real money maker. Ask others to add a bake to the table and set up your sale at work, a local fair, your kid's school or local sports club.

  • Ask your work about matched giving! Some work places have a budget to match all donations up to a certain amount.

  • Ask local businesses to sponsor you - you could iron their logo onto your jersey for the ride.

What support will their be to help me reach my fundraising goal?

You will have a designated member of the fundraising team, who is there to support you every step of the way. We have a host of resources available to you such as buckets, banners, t-shirts, balloons and contactless devices (subject to availability). We'll be here to check in with and talk through to support you with any fundraising ideas you may have!

What is the 80% deadline?

12 weeks before the challenge, we need to confirm and pay Global Adventures for each member of the team. We therefore need to set a deadline for participants to reach 80% of their fundraising total, so that we have definitely already received enough funds to be able to confirm and pay for each participant. If you are self-funding, this is the point where you need to pay the balance of £1,200 to Global Adventures.

What happens if I don't reach the 80% fundraising deadline?

We'll keep in touch regularly and have fundraising check ins in the run up to the 80% deadline, to make sure you're on track and happy with reaching it. If you have any concerns at all about fundraising, we're on hand to chat and support you to reach your goal. You can also choose to self fund any short fall. If you are unable to reach the 80% amount by then, unfortunately we would not be able to confirm your place on the cycle.
