Trek Questions
How many days is the trek?
You'll be away from home for 11 days and will spend 7 of these trekking Kilimanjaro. You can check out the itinerary for a full breakdown.
How big will the team be?
We're aiming to have a team of 30 take on this incredible challenge. There'll be plenty of meet ups and training walks to get to know each other before you head off on your adventure!
How fit do I need to be?
This challenge has been graded as Extreme (3) by Global Adventure's challenge grading scheme, meaning the trek has been designed to be challenging but achievable as long as you train beforehand. You will be trekking for 7 consecutive days, and at high altitude and in varied temperatures, a good cardiovascular fitness is required – the fitter you are the more you will enjoy the challenge! We will provide you with a full training guide from Global Adventure Challenges.
If you have any doubts regarding your suitability for this challenge please contact us and we'll put you in touch with the Global Adventures team.
Is there a minimum age to take part?
All participants must be over the age of 14 and anyone wishing to take part under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian on the trek.
Do I need specialist kit?
We'll supply you with a kit list of what to take once you register to take part. Apart from some broken in trekking boots and some waterproofs you do not need any specialist kit.
What support will their be on the trek?
This is a fully supported trek. Alongside your St Peter's Hospice staff representative there will be a strong support team with a professional Global Adventure Challenges leader from the UK as well as local guides and porters. Full comprehensive medical kits will be taken with the group and all guides are trained in first aid. Mobile telephones and ICOM radios will be used to ensure your safety and security at all times. A local English-speaking medic will also be joining the trek.
Will the altitude affect me?
Altitude sickness is caused by decreased oxygen concentration in the blood due to the lower atmospheric pressure at high altitude. Everyone is effected differently, but symptoms can include breathlessness, nausea and headaches. Please be assured that this trek has been designed to maximise your chances for sufficient acclimatisation i.e. the speed at which we trek, the route taken, acclimatisation days taken and the number of highly trained experts in the support team. This trek with Global Adventure has a 90% summit success rate and the team will do all they can to help you reach the top!
Do I have to carry my own luggage?
No. Participants will only have to carry a day pack (for items such as sunscreen, water, camera, sun hat etc.) and kit bag will be carried from camp to camp by our porters. You will be able to leave some items not required for the trek at the lodge in Moshi whilst we are on the trek.
Fundraising Questions
What is the fundraising target?
This will vary depending which funding option you choose when registering:
Fully funded: Your fundraising target will be £5,700
Self funding: You won't have a set fundraising target but we'd love you to raise as much as you can!
Part funding: Your fundraising target will be £3,000
What are the best ways to get fundraising?
There are hundreds of ways to reach your fundraising goal, the world is your oyster, we've popped a few possibilities below:
Set up an online fundraising page (we recommend JustGiving), this makes it really simple for people to donate and all donations come through to St Peter's automatically. It really helps to personalise your page - add photos and let people know why you've chosen to tackle Kili.
Host an event - there are so many options here including pub quizzes, supper clubs and barn dances. Find a space, set your ticket price and invite all your friends and family to come along! Events can take a bit more work to set up but they're a brilliant way to bring in a bulk of your fundraising in one night (and we have plenty of resources to help)
Hold a bake sale! It sounds simple (and it is) but these can be a real money maker. Ask others to add a bake to the table and set up your sale at work, a local fair, your kid's school or local sports club.
Ask your work about matched giving! Some work places have a budget to match all donations up to a certain amount.
What support will their be to help me reach my fundraising goal?
We have a whole host of resources available to you for any events you choose to host such as buckets, banners, t-shirts, balloons and contactless devices (subject to availability). We'll also provide you with a fundraising guide and personal check ins to talk through and support with any fundraising ideas you may have!
What is the 80% deadline?
12 weeks before the trek begins we need to confirm and pay the balance for all part and full funded places, this means we need to set a deadline for participants to reach 80% of their fundraising total before we can finalise your place on the trek.
What happens if I don't reach the 80% fundraising deadline?
We'll keep in touch regularly and have fundraising check ins in the run up to the 80% deadline. If you have any concerns at all about fundraising, we're on hand to chat and support you to reach your goal. You can also choose to self fund any short fall, however, if you were unable to fundraise to the 80% amount then unfortunately, we would not be able to confirm your place on the trek.
