Debate around Assisted Dying has increased over recent years, and especially since the Assisted Dying Bill was introduced at the House of Lords in July 2024.
We recognise it is a complex and emotive issue and understand that many people and organisations will have strong opinions on this subject. We respect everyone's right to their own opinion.
Hospice UK, the umbrella organisation for Hospices across the UK, recently published their neutral position on this topic. In line with Hospice UK, we neither oppose nor support a change in the law. We believe that Hospices, as experts in palliative and end of life care, can play a role in sharing experiences and informing the debate. Assisted dying is not currently legal. Our care and support is, and always will be, provided within the legal frameworks of our society. If the law in England & Wales is changed in the future, we will continue to support patients in making choices that are right for them.
If patients hold views which differ from our position on this subject, this does not prevent them from accessing our services and it will not change how we care for them.
Our priority is ensuring that everyone in our community who could benefit from Hospice care is aware of our services and support. As this debate progresses, we will continue to rigorously pursue our purpose, which is to give adults in our community the support, comfort and dignity they need at the end of life.
