Talking About End of Life Care Wishes

Course content

  • Describe ways to sensitively approach talking about end of life care wishes and preferences
  • Explain the significance of cultural and spiritual considerations
  • Recognise ACP documentation (including ReSPECT) and the legal status of such

Caring for someone with Dementia at end of life

Course content

  • Define Dementia and the common types
  • Recognise when the person with dementia is approaching end of life
  • Discuss the challenges of caring for a person with Dementia
  • Review symptoms and how they can be managed including tools that can aid

Supporting someone who is grieving

Course content

  • Describe what grief is
  • Explain what influences the experience of grief
  • Demonstrate how to support individuals who are grieving
  • Recognise ways to support yourself and colleagues

3 Day Development Course

This 3 day development course is aimed at Support Workers who are supporting people at end of life. It can be used as supportive learning and evidence for the Care Certificate.

The course will cover:

  • What is end of life care, how do we recognise those approaching end of life, how do we know what's important to them.
  • Understanding holistic assessment using a case study approach and the importance of documentation.
  • Symptom management and your role in this, focusing on non-drug interventions including pain, fatigue and breathlessness an overview of syringe pumps and care after death.
  • Communication, to include conversations with patients and families, communicating with other health care professionals, questioning and listening skills.
